The Director of Engineering will be responsible for rapidly expanding the Engineering Team while ensuring the current team meets the existing deliverables (i.e., OKRs) which are growing fast due to market demand for our solutions and the explosive growth of Additive Manufacturing. The candidate will plan and direct all aspects of engineering activities and ensure products, initiatives and processes set the bar for innovation at heights never before achieved. Driving fast, efficient product development, continuous product improvements while establishing strong Design Engineering processes to set the foundation for the growth of the Engineering Team is a must. We’re an early stage start-up so establishing processes, while remaining nimble and moving at lightning speed, will be an important objective.
Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions of the position include but are not limited to the following:
Possess strong leadership skills to hire, train, mentor and retain talented engineers from multiple disciplines including electrical, mechanical, software, chemical and industrial engineering.
There will be 10 -12 engineers on the initial team all based in Buffalo. Over time the Director will grow the team substantially in terms of people and office locations.
Develop Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) for the Engineering Team that are laser aligned with the company’s OKRs.
Develop and deploy processes for critical knowledge transfer, rotations, and exposure to all facets of our technical operations.
Drive a high-performing, collaborative culture which thrives on the values of ownership and accountability that anticipates and exceeds customer expectations.
Lead development, validation and production implementation of new products, product design changes and/or improvements. We’re a start-up so while leadership is essential, this is also a “hands-on” role that requires an individual with proven engineering skills.
Support requirements for quality, delivery, cost reduction and compliance for our product portfolio including software, hardware, consumables and services resulting in exceptional customer satisfaction.
Provide technical leadership and senior representation of our solutions to customers, vendors, sales channels, and manufacturing partners. Developing relationships with engineering leadership at key customers will be a top priority.
Possess a strong interest in cutting edge technology with the ability to identify, evaluate and deploy new technologies to meet the growing needs of customers and ensure we maintain market leadership.
Present the engineering plans, status updates and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to project stakeholders, senior leadership, and the Board of Directors.
Collaborate with the CTO to identify, prioritize and document detailed product requirements.
Manage the development and execution of test plans in accordance with product specifications and requirements
Drive the Engineering Team and set direction using Data Driven Logic to evaluate, present and support alternatives
Lead and execute full technology lifecycle management of product design solutions from concept through development into production.
Manage the strategies and activities of the engineering department to help achieve revenue growth and profitability objectives.
Set-up infrastructure and documentation to support ISO certification.
Meet monthly OPEX targets and maximize ROI from investments made.

Education and Experience
B.S. degree in Engineering required; Mechanical or Electrical preferred or a M.S. degree in Engineering.
8 – 10 years minimum of past working experience in the relevant engineering or technical field with 3 – 5 years of leadership experience
Strong understanding of Engineering principles including fluid flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer strength of materials, work/power consumption is a must.
Experience bringing a new technology to market.
Experience with project management; software project management with proven ability to create and manage project schedules and timelines.
Experience in an ISO certified organization, ideally the candidate was heavily involved in achieving ISO certification in the past.
Experience working with contract manufacturing partners a plus.
Experience implementing machine learning.
A record of individual technical achievement to quickly build credibility with the team.
Experience with multiple computer applications such as Terminal Server and Visual Studio.
Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing is a plus.
Experience in a scaling a company with a growth mindset.
International market business experience with both customers and supply chain.
