Employment

Employment
(continued)
May 2005 – August 2007 Bosch Braking Systems of Farmington Hills, MI and South Bend, IN

Four rotations (~1.3 years) as a Co-Op with Robert Bosch North America - Braking Systems Division in Farmington Hills, MI and South Bend, IN. Familiarization w/ Six-Sigma fundamentals, Failure-Mode based design reviews, Data-Acquisition, Vehicle Dynamics.

January 2009 – August 2011 GE Aviation of Cincinnati, OH

Three rotations (2.5+ years) as an Engineer/Technologist in the Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP) at GE Aviation. Time divided between Turbine Airfoils C.o.E., Turbine Aero Design Team, and MI&ES. Turbine Airfoils Center of Excellence: Member of the Heat Transfer Analysis group. Gained experience transferring boundary conditions from CFD to H/T models, validating internal airfoil flow models via bench testing, and performing shaped hole cooling effectiveness calculations. Participated in F101 SLEP HPT Blade Preliminary Design Reviews.

Turbine Aerodynamics Design Team: Principal on CFM56 HPT Blade TE Shock analysis, Advanced Tandem Blade High-Lift LPT Concept design & CFD evaluation, performance impact of cooling flows on HPT Nozzle. Reinforced fundamentals of turbomachinery, implemented FORTRAN code in CFX for modeling unsteady boundary conditions. Leveraged data from CFD analysis, rig and engine testing, and historical knowledge to make decisions in HPT blade manufacturing and finishing processes.

Inlet & Exhaust Aero Systems: Gained additional valuable experience with steady CFD models (RANS), exposed to time-accurate (LES) models, reacting and non-reacting flows. Investigation of RANS eddy-viscosity model (k-e, k-w, SST) grid sensitivities solidified understanding of transport equations, discretization schemes, and turbulence modeling concepts. Analysis work included models of multiple stream flows, supersonic flows, cooled and uncooled geometries of military engines.

February 2012 – August 2013 Composite Engineering Inc. of Sacramento, CA

Worked as a Systems Engineer II with a focus on propulsion integration, vehicle simulations, and heat transfer analysis. My responsibilities included full authority of vehicle propulsion system: integration, performance predictions (maximum speed, SFC, range, etc.), and interfacing with the engine supplier (MicroTurbo).

-Developed a general algorithm for the Nth-order accurate extrapolation of non-linear functions (used for trajectory computation)
-Used MATLAB to generate basic performance predictions for an aft-fan turbofan concept based on a current turbojet design.
-Created a time-accurate numerical model for a pneumatic launch rail system using MATLAB that predicted launch speed given vehicle weight, configuration, chamber pressure, and ambient conditions.
-Generated 4D “Aero Deck” tables from wind-tunnel and CFD work for an aircraft in preliminary design (baseline aero plus control input deltas).
-Generated 4D “Engine Deck” tables using GasTurb12 engine software tailored to known engine performance and dimensions.
-Designed and oversaw in-vehicle ground testing of TRI60-5+ turbojet engine to estimate installed thrust and inlet diffuser efficiency.
-Computed basic stability margin of a preliminary aircraft design based on wind-tunnel aero data and CFD analysis.
-Performed multiple Simulink 6DOF simulations using standard mi...
