As a senior project manager and geo-structural design engineer, Mr. Edens has managed and performed geotechnical and structural design for the past 23 years on numerous projects. Responsibilities have included engineering analysis, supervision of office and field personnel, cost control, marketing, and project management. The majority of the projects have been executed for state departments of transportation, FHWA, US Army Corps of Engineers, large commercial clients, general contractors, and specialty foundation contractors performing design/build projects.
Major responsibilities have included design of earth retention systems, landslide remediation systems and foundation support systems including soldier beams/wood lagging walls, Soil Mix walls, concrete caisson walls, slurry and concrete diaphragm walls, soil nail insert walls and tieback systems, jet grouting, compaction grouting, micropiles, caissons, deep soil mixing, displacement grout piles and bridge piers. Design of these systems involved evaluation of soil conditions, development of earth pressure diagrams, slope stability analysis, settlement analyses, structural element design for steel, concrete and timber structures, support element design for tiebacks and structural steel bracing, construction procedures, material specifications and cost evaluations. Mr. Edens has extensive experience in structural steel and concrete design, construction estimating, construction management and field quality control for projects across the Eastern US. Most recently, Mr. Edens was Chief Design Engineer with Coastal Caisson Corp in Tampa, FL (A Bauer Company) before accepting his current position as Senior Geotechnical Engineer with Stratus Group in Butler, PA.

Project Experience

Rehabilitation of Nesbitt Dam, Wilkes-Barre, PA
Geotechnical evaluation and structural design of temporary shoring involving an anchored soldier pile and lagging retaining wall. The retaining structure was required for excavation downstream of the dam to install roller compacted concrete as a stabilizing effort for the existing dam. Design included analysis of lateral forces from an existing 60-foot tall masonry wall located behind the retaining wall structure and the effects of highly saturated soils above bedrock. The project was performed for Brayman Construction Corp. as a design-build project.

Baker Hughes Joint Facilities Micropile Foundations, Lamar, PA
Geotechnical and structural design of micropile foundation for a new office building project. The design included development of pile layout, grade beam design, and pile connection details. The design included complete plans and specifications for construction. Project was performed for Brayman Construction Corp.

SR 0168 B-13 Bridge Replacement (PennDOT), Beaver County, PA
Geotechnical and structural design of a temporary sheetpile cofferdam for construction of new bridge abutments. The project consisted of design for the temporary earth support structure including evaluation and remediation of a failed portion of the cofferdam. Analyses included finite element modeling using PLAXIS to back analyze the failure mechanisms and to evaluate pore pressures due to water flow into the cofferdam. Project was performed for Lane Construction Company.

Route 340 over Compton Creek Micropiles (VaDOT), Page County, VA
Structural design of micropiles for support of a new bridge. Design was performed using AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications for the design of micropiles and associated pile caps (pier footings). Analyses included evaluation of applied pier loads to the pile group using STAAD modeling to determine load distribution across the pile cap and supporting piles. Structural evaluation of the “as planned” pile profile indicated inadequate capacities in the piles and, therefore, required a re-design which was provided to the contractor. In addition, support was provided for all contractor pile load testing including test beam and instrumentation design. The project was performed for Brayman Construction Corp.

SR 60 Soil Mix Wall, Tampa, FL
Geotechnical and structural design of cutter soil mix wall for protection of waterfront roadway structures. Design utilized finite element analysis (PLAXIS). Successfully convinced the Owner's project engineer to re-evaluate the design and change project specifications to meet achievable construction objectives and saved the company significant time and expense on the project. Project was performed for the Florida DOT.

Plant Scherer Micropile Foundation, Juliette, GA
Geotechnical evaluation and structural design of alternate foundations for power plant structures. The alternate design using high capacity micropile foundation elements saved the owner over 40% of construction costs over traditional pile systems.

Heckscher Drive CSV columns for Roadway Embankment, Jacksonville, FL
Design of MSE Wall embankment foundations using CSV (sand/cement) columns and deep displacement grout columns to prevent excessive settlements. The alternate design saved over 50% on construction costs in lieu of excavation and replacement of soft organic soil layer.
