Project Engineer 1/10 to 10/12
ALLIED DESIGN A&E, Contracted through Morton Building, Inc. - Morton, IL

Recruited to fill a contract position for Morton Buildings. Managed diverse design projects from initial concept to finalization. Identified constructability, cost feasibility, and code compliance issues for 46 states and designed solutions consistent with customer preferences, working in collaboration with architects, Project Managers, and other Project Engineers.

Worked on 500+ projects, including commercial warehouses, businesses, residential houses, churches, multiuse facilities, veterinary clinics, and fire stations. Ensured compliance with appropriate building, energy, and fire codes. Highlights of projects and achievements include the following.

o Part of a team to transition Project Engineer responsibilities from only design to design, project management, and follow-through. The new model was a huge success, reducing turnaround time by as much as five weeks and virtually eliminating major construction issues.

o Project: A two-story residence with a crawl space and entirely vaulted ceilings, bringing four roofs together at one point. It also had an outside wall that was primarily glass and a partially open plan for the second floor. Challenge: In addition to very complex connections, the placement of openings interfered with structural components.

Action: Created a theoretical model to ensure continuous load paths and appropriately designed supporting members, and also implemented a strategy to allow for compatibility with opening placement while maintaining structural integrity. Impact: The project was successfully completed with zero constructability issues.


o Project: A commercial, open drain farm facility for fertilizer storage on existing concrete with the entire front side open to allow for front-end loader access. The project included a wind truss on the front that needed to be designed to withstand the longitudinal wind forces and transfer them to supporting members. It also had twelve 12-foot bays with 5-foot tall concrete walls. Challenge: Concrete connections had to be modeled as pinned connections causing increased forces in the front truss. There were also increasing anchor bolts set incorrectly that had to be avoided when designing the new connections.

Action: Modeled the project in Visual Analysis for all truss members and all socket connections. In the final design, the required strength of some members were over the allowable strength by less than 10%. I over-designed the column socket connections to account for this, with the understanding that the column sockets will act more like partial moment resisting connections rather than simple pin connections, reducing the load into the truss and increasing the load on the column socket connection. Result: The project was completed with zero load or deflection issues.

o Began in the Choice Express Group, averaging 14+ jobs weekly while the next closest engineer averaged 7 to 9. Promoted to the Specialty Team within just nine months and hailed for being a “top producer.”
