Engineering Academic Research Groups / Academic Projects

- Project Leader/Engineer: “Optimization Strategies in High Efficiency and Clean Combustion Technology” (2011-2012)
o Supervised a project group to research cleaner and more efficient combustion processes. Designed and supervised the research approaches and methods. Commercial combustion software, CHEMKINTM, was used to report the specific state of “flameless combustion” - which can lead to both a decrease in pollutants and increase in efficiency.

- Project Leader/Engineer: “Proposal for Increased Nozzle Efficiency Using Plug Nozzles” (2011-2012)
o Led a project group for mock-up government proposal for DARPA’s Broad Area Announcement (BAA). Supervised technical details and made all strategic decisions for the proposal following actual government guidelines. Successfully demonstrated technical feasibility of the selected topic with full details of cost allocations and schedules.

- Simulation Engineer: “High Order Discretized Galerkin Solver for a turbine-blade passage” (2011-2012)
o Modeled and simulated a turbine-blade passage with a custom-created Discretized Galerkin (DG) solver. The goal of the research was to construct a simulator of high accuracy at low computational cost. The completed solver successfully simulated a turbine at a low computational cost (tested validity with a commercial package).

- Graduate Research Member in Fluid Dynamics Research Group / University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2011-2012)
o Implemented a Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) scheme to improve the accuracy of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Constructed a code for WENO scheme with MatlabTM then applied it to an extensively studied setting of Sod’s shock tube. Successfully demonstrated WENO scheme’s effects of data noise reduction.

- Undergraduate Research Member in Simulations of Flow Physics and Acoustics (SOFIA) Group / University of California, Los Angeles (2010-2011)
o Researched aerodynamic effects of a water flow on bridge supporting columns. Modeled and Evaluated wake and vortex generations of 2D cylinders utilizing open source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program, OpenFOAMTM. The research successfully found the optimum ranges for the distance between columns.
