• Lead team of peers in management, investigation and innovative planning, design, and repair of a thermo-mechanical test to compare dynamic ring crack initiation components in glass, ceramic, and glass-ceramic materials.
• Investigation was promoted by a complex unusual material property system structure causing a localized negative coefficient of thermal expansion leading to an auxetic (negative poisson’s ratio) like response in the material.
• Experimentation followed ASTM standards included destructive failure analysis and non-destructive evaluation using FTIR optical absorption spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, SEM, and custom built thermo-mechanical spherical Hertzian impact tester.
• Work proved a cost effective alternative to high performance transparent ceramics.
• All work was presented and reported in written and oral form in front of the department.
