Recent Lab/Project Work:

Senior Design Project – Hungarian Dam

Objective: Research the Hungarian Dam and determine courses of action to remediate the site.
- Contracted by the Keweenaw Land Trust to gather information on the Hungarian Dam and surrounding site.
- Environmental Team: Collect and analyze soil and water samples from various locations to determine ecological impact.
- Project Specialty: Analyze the geological structure/formation of the site, and examine history of geological activity.
- Outcome: The results our team contributed indicated that the toxin levels/metals present in the water and soil sediments were not harmful to the ecosystem surrounding the Hungarian Dam.

Project: Air Stripping Tower Design

Objective: Design and simulate a pilot scale packed air stripping tower to design full scale to treat 10 mg/L chloroform concentration in water to 5 µg/L or less.
- Designed air-water ratios (air flow to water flow) to predict adequate removal results using StEPP and ASAP software.
- Facilitated a pilot scale packed air stripping tower simulation to determine the treatment efficiency.
- Gas chromatography used to determine the mass transfer coefficient and amount of chloroform removed.
- Outcome: The optimal air-water ratio was found when there was high air flow and low water flow. The pilot scale removed all of the chloroform present in the influent water.
