• Goal was to grow algae and then turn that algae into a usable biodiesel
• Worked on a team of four members
• Managed project budget under a $500 limit
• Designed and built a bioreactor to grow algae and built for optimum growth of algae
• Designed bioreactor to safely handle the algae to avoid group from touching algae
• Led team in taking measurements during algae growth; pH, Temperature, and observations
• Performed extraction procedures to remove lipids from the algae
• Determined percent yield of lipids from the dry weight of algae
• Produced 76.88% lipid content which matches the best ever seen without expensive equipment
• Performed Transesterification reaction to turn the lipids into biodiesel
• Performed different test to determine if biodiesel was produced
• Produced 4.5mL of usable biodiesel

Microfluidic Chip Fall 2014
