Research Assistant
Part of a joint research project funded by the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) investigating the prediction of fault reactivation due to hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs (09122-06). This research is conducted in an effort to characterize the geomechanical performance of shale gas reservoirs in the process of hydraulic fracturing stimulation. This is currently targeted towards the Marcellus shale in the Northeastern United States.
• Further developed shale reservoir modeling techniques using finite element analysis by introducing heterogeneous geological, fracturing and stability parameters regarding fault slip (reactivation) tendency under modified in-situ stress fields.
• Applied sensitivity analysis to modeling and simulation design parameters in order to characterize critical or near critical stress state conditions to optimize fracture treatment design.
• Created, enhanced and overhauled project specific modeling code written in FORTRAN and MATLAB to expand the applicable problem scope and allow an ease of access and understanding to new individuals. In-house finite element code was written in FORTRAN which used commercial pre-processing software such as PATRAN or ABAQUS for mesh development and MATLAB or ParaView for post processing calculation and visualization.
• Evaluated seismic data for fault interpretation and reservoir stress distributions throughout a targeted Marcellus shale region.
• Developed training manuals and workflows for project specific computer code and supporting theory in order to brief new individuals and cover technical or troubleshooting related problems which may arise for those with little to no experience.
• Collaborated on a daily basis with project team members in order to develop and organize new or existing solution strategies and share ideas.
• Consistently exceeded expectations in weekly progress meetings under little to no supervision.
Teaching Assistant August 2012 – January 2013
• Coordinated the lab room instruction of 40-60 undergraduate students on the petroleum phase behavior principles, while ensuring proper lab safety and procedure. This includes both computer aided design and testing in addition to physical PVT lab equipment.
• Graded 60-80 weekly student lab reports as well as weekly or bi-weekly homework assignments, making recommendations and/or comments for future improvements and to ensure an understanding of the fundamental concepts.
• Administered and supervised the testing of 60-80 students which required ensuring students did not violate the university or departmental guidelines.
• Individual mentoring of undergraduate students on phase behavior principles as well as other engineering fundamentals.
• Received positive student feedback for demonstrating abstract relationships to complex problems which helped students in understanding concepts which were difficult to comprehend from other academic sources. It is difficult to find sources at times which “connect all of the dots” and their feedback and outlook displayed a much more positive outlook or understanding after meetings.
