• Investigated the economic and technical feasibility of recovering potable water from the atmosphere, powered only by exhaust from a military truck [Two person team]
Goal: Reduce cost impact of supplying water in remote, hot climates
Project Skills: Modelling (Aspen Plus), design creativity, optimization
• Determined an ammonia-water refrigeration system was most practical
Conclusion: Theoretically possible, however impractical given air flow demand

Regional Electricity Demand Case Study: Natural Gas vs.
Coal vs. Small Module Nuclear Reactor (SMR), Ithaca, NY Aug. 2014 – Dec. 2014
• Analyzed the possibility of meeting 200 MWe with an SMR in lieu of retrofitting the coal-powered Cayuga Operating Plant to use natural gas [Three person team]
Goal: Determine if an SMR can be practical and competitive in Tompkins County
Project Skills: Resourcefulness, collaboration, autonomous problem-solving
• Presented findings to panel of 5 professors and 3 TAs
Conclusion: SMR has smallest environmental impact, but natural gas is most
cost competitive
